Development & Series

Historical series, residency works, and periods of experimentation tracing the development of Moschburg's painting practice.

Woman Warrior Series

The Woman Warrior Series examines domestic violence through the psychological tension between threat and self-determination. Drawing on the visual language of combat, Moschburg explores how fear, vigilance, and resistance register in the human figure. Rather than presenting strength as invulnerability, the paintings consider the struggle to preserve or reclaim agency under conditions of control.

Gran Canaria Residency

During a seven-week residency in Gran Canaria in 2023, Moschburg explored whether immersion in an unfamiliar culture could transform his artistic perception. *The Fire Goddess of Gran Canaria* emerged from his first impressions of the island—its sensual beauty, volcanic landscape, and distinctive architecture, translated into a mythic figure. Several weeks later, *Dancing Man* arose from a deeper encounter: not the island as scenery, but as a lived experience. Its swirling colors, gestures, and multiplying hands evoke the freedom, individuality, and human connections he encountered. The residency marked a return to painting driven by personal experience, shifting his attention from outward appearances toward the less visible character of a place.

Dancing Man (2023) by Moschburg, an expressive painting of a multicolored human figure bending forward, surrounded by sweeping brushstrokes and outlined hands in a luminous abstract setting.

Chromatic Experiment - 2022

Beginning in January 2022, Moschburg undertook a self-directed experiment in chromatic immersion, organizing selected aspects of daily life—painting, clothing, food, and film—around the color red. Conceived as the first in a sequence of three-month studies across the color spectrum, the experiment ended after its initial stage. *Conception* and *Red Conscious* emerged from this period, documenting an inquiry into whether sustained exposure to a single color could influence perception and artistic expression.

Conception (2022) by Moschburg, an abstract oil painting of flowing pink and crimson organic forms surrounding a dark central space illuminated by a concentrated burst of light.

Art-Immolation Series

The *Art-Immolation Series* (2017–2019) emerged from a near-death experience that Moschburg understood as the destruction of his former identity and the beginning of his life as an artist. Immolation becomes a metaphor for transformation: the dissolution of one self giving rise to another, newly attentive to beauty, perception, and the overlooked details of ordinary existence. Rather than reconstruct the event, the paintings investigate its enduring imprint on consciousness. *Color* (2017) replaces physical likeness with an emotional self-portrait; *Half Dead* and *Reality Warp* (2018) explore the fragile boundaries of perception and existence; and *Life Over Death* (2019) confronts mortality directly. Together, the works trace an awakening in which an encounter with death becomes the foundation of an artistic identity.
